11 Best Marketing Books – Updated (2019)

For a Marketer, the right books will shape your career, spread your message and help acquire customers, push them through the funnel and earn revenue out of it.  Books truly have the highest form of ROI. So here are the best Marketing books or the must read books for a Marketer.

1. Purple Cow by Seth Godin 

Marketing starts at Seth Godin, and if I don’t have his book the first thing in my mind, then there is something wrong with me. But thank Godin, it is not! Seth Godin wrote this book many years ago but it’s a classic because it says something basic, timeless and important. Make remarkable things, do remarkable marketing. It’s the best way to grow. It’s the best way to sell. Ryan Holiday recommended this book too, in his own words, “As a marketer, the clearest takeaway from the book is: Represent people who stand out, it makes it easier to do what you do”.

2  The Unpublished Ogilvy by David Ogilvy 

We always see Ogilvy as the Ad Man, but he is a great writer, leader and business philosopher. The book is actually a collection of memos, letters and notes by Ogilvy when he was at O&M. What makes it more interesting is that, the stuff was not written for publication. you always want to know the typical functioning of a great man and this books exactly does the same

3. 22 Immutable Laws: Violate Them at Your Own Risk! by Al Ries and Jack Trout 

There are books and there are timeless books, this the second one. It’s a short quick read but you will take away a lot from this book. Look’s like some of laws inspired the new age lean marketing. Even then the authors were telling Entrepreneurs that build something which people want. Dive into this small book, I am sure its worth.

4.  Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make Competition Irrelevant  by W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne 

You can look at this book as for Entrepreneurs but it is very relevant in every aspect of life. It simply says, “invent your own category”. You as a Marketer can learn how to differentiate your product in real sense, carve out your own category and make it your monopoly. This is a highly gifted book in the last two years.

5. Growth Hacker Marketing by Ryan Holiday

This book is about doing more with less. It is a very mindset oriented book and has a lot of specific case studies on how few startups grow in a small amount of time and near to zero resources. Ryan is all telling us to grab the mindset around those case studies and not the hacks. And Ryan is just 31 now, and has about seven best selling books, he was the Director of Marketing for American Apparel at the age of 25, now you understand why I grab his mindset.

6. Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products by Nir Eyal and Ryan Hoover 

You should read this book after Growth hacker Marketing and Influence. If you’re building or growing a startup(and if a SaaS Startup, do not miss), I suggest reading this. Baking marketing in your product is the best way to scale and achieve true growth.  Initially Nir Eyal self published this book and it became a rich resource inside tech companies and then it was picked by Penguin. Ryan Hoover, the co-writer, went on to found which has recently blown up using a lot of the principles in the book.

7. Permission Marketing: Turning Strangers into Friends and Friends into Customers by Seth Godin 

Don’t blame me if you see Seth Godin more than ones in this list. Cant help! Excluding certain product categories, marketers have really not focused on building assets previously, this book has really changed and influenced a lot of marketers to build their own email lists or similar assets. And that email list has been sort of an ATM for them , where they send out an email to their subscribers and quickly sell good products to withdraw money. Start building yours.

8. Trust Me, I’m Lying: Confessions of a Media Manipulator  by Ryan Holiday 

I am a big Ryan Holiday fan. He is legit and speaks the truth, he wont sell you for his revenue, he will sell you only if the product is right for you. His book will shock you and will question the way you consume information on the internet or TV, but what i take from this book is how can the underlying framework or thought process. be taken and used for good purposes. Ever heard of values and ethics in the media industry, the book teaches how not to break them. Someone in the Amazon Review section even described Ryan as, “The Batman as Digital Marketing”.

9. Gonzo Marketing: Winning Through Worst Practices by Christopher Locke 

Marketing, has always been about the same thing – who your customers are and where they are. We often see this from demographic and geographic data standpoint. The Author urges you to stop treating your customers as data. Instead, you should start genuine conversation and form relationships by tapping into your people’s online communities. And time has repeatable shown that relationships have been the most effective tool in Marketing.

10. Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion – by Dr. Robert Cialdini

Often this book is refereed as the book of science behind why people say ‘Yes’. While Hooked will let you hook your customers, but to trigger the first yes, you need to do more. And Influence will help you know it. For Social Proof, Scott Adams recommended Influence as his best book on the persuasion.

11. All Marketers Tell Stories – by Seth Godin

I consider Story telling as one of the four life skills that everyone should have. Yes, the old saying is true, stories do sell. And Seth explains you what is a great story, and how stories are trusted. Expect the typical Seth Godin style writing.
